ACIT-Hub Team

Dr Helen Cooper

University of Surrey ACIT-Hub Lead

With a PhD in Machine Learning I transitioned to the RTP and professional services space in 2012, since when I've been managing the research labs and leading our compute strategy for the Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) and now the People Centred AI institute (PAI), managing research projects and training networks and organising conferences.

Dr Jaydeep Mody

University of Surrey ACIT-Hub Co-Lead

With a PhD in Computational Physics, I started as an RTP in 2013. I am currently a Team Lead of the Sysadmin team within Research Computing Services at Surrey. My activities include a mix of line/project management, coaching/mentoring, and providing software and systems support for our linux based HPC and Research IT Platforms.

Professor Mark Plumbley

University of Surrey ACIT-Hub Co-Lead

My research concerns AI for Sound: using machine learning and signal processing for analysis and recognition of sounds. My focus is on detection, classification and separation of acoustic scenes and events, particularly real-world sounds, using methods such as deep learning, sparse representations and probabilistic models.

Andrew Gittings

University of Oxford ACIT-Hub Co-Lead

I am the Team Lead of the Advanced Research Computing (ARC) team at Oxford. I also provide software and systems support to assist ARC users in the optimal deployment and use of scientific software. Specifically these are applications running on our Linux based High Performance Computing cluster platforms.

Prof Wes Armour

University of Oxford ACIT-Hub Co-Lead

As Professor of Scientific Computing I am also the Associate Head of Department for Research. My research areas include energy-efficient machine learning and the use of machine learning for signal detection in time-domain radio astronomy to stock price prediction in finance and prime number prediction in cryptography. I am the Director and Principal Investigator of JADE and JADE2, a 700-GPU machine that was the first national High Performance Computer facility dedicated to advancing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in the UK and now JADE2.5 an AMD based GPU compute cluster.

Dr Twin Karmarkham

University of Sheffield ACIT-Hub Co-Lead

I am a Research Software Engineer with over 7 years of experience developing research software for various research groups within the University. As a specialist in Machine Learning/Deep Learning within the group, I do development, provide consultation and teach courses related to the subject. I also have experience in agent-based modelling, parallel programming (GPUs), High Performance Computing (HPC), web services, mobile application development (iOS and Android), virtual reality and computer graphics.
