This one day, in person workshop introduces Agile ways of working through Kanban, tailored specifically for research infrastructure engineers and operations teams. If your team juggles tickets, incidents, maintenance and projects, and often feels overloaded or pulled in multiple directions, this course will show you practical ways to bring more visibility, focus and flow to your work.

Through a mix of activities, talks, and discussions, you will experience how visualising work, limiting work in progress and managing flow can improve throughput and reduce stress. You will then work in groups to map these ideas onto real research infrastructure workflows (e.g. incident handling, user requests, upgrades) and explore how to implement Kanban using tools you may already have.

Who is the course for?

This course is for research infrastructure engineers (at any career stage) who would like to learn how to use Kanban and Agile practices to manage their team’s day to day work more effectively.

Why participate?

The workshop will give you the opportunity to learn about the core principles of Kanban, see them in action, and discuss realistic changes you can try in your own team, along with discussion of the potential benefits and challenges of adopting Kanban in a research computing environment.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Explain the core principles of Agile and Kanban and how they apply to research infrastructure work.
• Reflect on how Kanban could improve their own team’s workflows (tickets, incidents, maintenance, small projects).
• Identify practical tools to implement Kanban (e.g. GitLab issue boards, GitHub projects, or boards in existing ticket systems).
• Identify concrete next steps and challenges for introducing or improving Kanban in their environment.

Event Logistics

The training will take place at the University of Surrey, Guildford. The course will start at 10am with registrations and refreshments available from 9:30am. Lunch will be provided and the hub is able to assist with travel costs for those coming from UKRI eligible institutions.
