What is an RIE community and co-design day?
The research infrastructure engineer (RIE) community and co-design days bring together RIEs from across a region and beyond to share knowledge and experience, build networks, and contribute to the ACIT Hub's training plans.
Join us in Edinburgh to meet other RIEs, discover new ways of working, and share your experiences.
The day will combine short, scene-setting talks to guide the day's discussions and structured interactive sessions where participants will explore and develop RIE training ideas.
Training is more effective when the people who will be benefiting from it are included in the design, both the content and the delivery. The day will include discussions about training gaps and ideas for potential training events and materials. This day is part of a number of co-design sessions run by the ACIT Hub to find out what training the community needs.
This RIE community and co-design day will build on the discussions and priorities identified in previous ACIT Hub co-design events, where research infrastructure engineers (RIEs) highlighted key training topics and preferred formats (e-learning, hackathons, webinars, in person courses). The focus of the co-design part of the day is to move from “what we need” to “how we design it”; developing concrete training plans that ACIT Hub can take forward into course and event development.
During the interactive sessions, participants will work in small groups to develop training plans on specific topics, including:
- Target audience and pre-requisites
- Learning objectives
- Format
- Topic description
- Learning activities
Participants will explore what skills RIEs need, discover what training is available and in development, and gain practical experience of developing training plans; plus, they will have the opportunity to meet other RIEs and directly impact the training developed by ACIT Hub.

We will shortly announce a range of talks from RIEs to learn from each other and provide a focus for attendees to start discussions.
If you are an RIE interested in speaking at the co-design day on a topic related to low-latency networking, orchestration, CVEs, or data storage, we are interested in hearing from you. Please email ACIT@surrey.ac.uk with a brief outline of your topic.
Who is it for?
The day is suitable for RIEs of any level to attend.
Event Logistics
The event will take place at EPCC, University of Edinburgh. The programme will start at 10am with registrations and refreshments available from 9:30am. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. The day will wrap up by 4pm.
Another co-design day will take place on 24th November at the University of Brisol.
